Today, October 1 marks International Day of Older Persons, a global occasion to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions that older people make in our communities.

To mark the day, Mayo University Hospital (MUH) Older Persons Service, together with colleagues from HSE West and North West, will host an information stand at SuperValu, Castlebar, on Wednesday, October 1, from 9.30am to 12pm.

The event will provide an opportunity for older persons, their relatives, and the wider community to learn more about:

  • Preventing functional decline
  • The importance of bone health
  • The role of exercise in healthy ageing

Healthcare professionals will be available to answer questions, share practical advice, and engage with members of the public on how to support healthier ageing.

Mairead Burke , Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Older Persons, Mayo University Hospital said “This is a chance for us to engage directly with older people and their families, to raise awareness about key aspects of healthy ageing, and to celebrate the many contributions that older people make in our communities.”

International Day of Older Persons serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting older members of society to live healthier, more active, and fulfilling lives.
