The emergency department at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar is seeing plenty of overcrowding according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
The overcrowding issues at Mayo University Hospital are showing little signs of alleviating, as recent figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation have revealed that the high volume of patients waiting for beds remains the same as yesterday.
Yesterday (Wednesday, August 27), statistics showed a rise in the number of people in the INMO 'Trolley Watch' report. A total of 24 people in total were in the Castlebar facility, with eight patients in the emergency department and 16 people in the ward elsewhere.
Today has seen a fall in the numbers reported across the country, with 446 patients waiting for beds, down 25 from those reported on Wednesday.
However, Mayo remains the same and has the fifth-highest total figures in the country, up two places from yesterday.
In terms of those in the ward outside of the Emergency Department, MUH has risen up the table two places, now only trailing University Hospital Limerick.
These figures help to paint the picture of a difficult week for the hospital.
Yesterday, it was revealed that over 350 patients have attended the Mayo University Hospital Emergency Department this week alone, with more than 100 patients requiring admission to the hospital.
In the wake of the influx of people presenting in the department, the hospital issued advice that those attending will experience very long waiting times.
