It has been revealed that over €1.5 million will be allocated to the upgrade of Mayo roads as part of the government’s Local Improvement Scheme.
The seven-figure funding boost serves as part of a wider €14 million increase in funding around the country as part of the scheme, which will be used to provide vital infrastructural improvements to rural roads and laneways.
The scheme was launched in 2017, and has so far nearly €170 million has been spent to upgrade 4,800 roads nationwide.
Prior to today’s announcement, €1 million was siphoned off for Mayo from the scheme, and the €500,000 top-up will be greatly welcomed by those who are in need of road improvements in their locality.
Mayo TD Dara Calleary (Fianna Fail) welcomed the news for his constituents.
“I am very much aware of the need to support this scheme and the demand that is apparent across our local authorities,” he stated.
“Over the coming months, my Department officials will work closely with local authorities to ensure that this funding is fully delivered this year to improve our non-public rural roads and laneway.”
Minister Alan Dillon (Fine Gael) echoed the sentiments of his fellow Mayo representative in commending the decision to increase the funds.
“Many of these roads aren’t maintained by the council, but they’re vital for access to homes, farms, and local amenities,” said Minister Dillon. "Without schemes like LIS, it would be next to impossible for many residents to carry out the upgrades on their own.”
