AIB Food Programme sees thousands of meals given out to Mayo people in need

A step towards food security in Mayo:

The pioneering partnership between FoodCloud and AIB is making a difference in County Mayo.

In County Mayo, 748 tonnes (almost 750,000 kilograms) of surplus food have been given out —imagine the weight of about 500 small cars.

Over 5,000 ready-to-eat meals have been served to people who need them in just one year.

This means:

  • Less food is wasted, which helps the environment.

  • More people get healthy meals, especially those who might not have enough to eat.

  • Community groups can help more people and offer new services because of the extra food.

  • Volunteers, including people from AIB, help make all of this possible

How does the AIB FoodCloud Meals Programme work?

FoodCloud collects surplus food from supermarkets, shops, and other places where it might otherwise be thrown away.

Ready-to-eat meals are prepared, using this rescued food in their special kitchen called FoodCloud Kitchen.

Then, these meals are delivered to charities and community groups so they can give them to people who need them.

The money is provided by AIB which also organise volunteers, and support to help FoodCloud run the programme.

AIB has been working with FoodCloud since 2018 to help reduce food waste and support communities.

“The AIB FoodCloud Community Meals Programme is a powerful evolution of our mission to ensure no good food goes to waste,” said Aoibheann O’Brien, FoodCloud co-founder and Director of Development.

"With AIB’s support, we’re reaching more charities and community groups across Ireland at a time when food insecurity is growing as the cost of living continues to rise."

AIB, a key partner to FoodCloud since 2018, has been supporting the programme as part of its wider commitment to sustainability and community impact.

“AIB’s purpose is to empower people to build a sustainable future.” said Barry Field, Corporate Affairs Director at AIB. “We are proud to support the AIB FoodCloud Community Meals Programme, which aligns with our commitment to fostering sustainable communities
and reducing food waste."
