Mayo Leads the Way as Heritage Council Calls for Event Submissions for National Heritage Week 2025

Heritage Week Launch with Minister of State Christopher O'Sullivan

The Heritage Council is calling on communities across County Mayo to join the nationwide celebration of National Heritage Week 2025, as the official event submission website is now live. With Mayo consistently punching above its weight in heritage engagement, local organisers are being urged to register their events for what promises to be a landmark year.

Dr. Deirdre Cunningham, Mayo County Council Heritage Officer, shared her enthusiasm, "Heritage Week in Mayo is something special. It’s a wonderful opportunity for communities to reconnect with their landscapes and local traditions. Whether it’s through exploring ancient ringforts, listening to traditional music, or learning about local folklore, people of all ages are coming together to share in the richness of our past and our present.”

National Heritage Week, now in its 25th year, is Ireland’s largest heritage festival, attracting almost 400,000 people to more than 2,000 events each year. Since the Heritage Council took over its management in 2006, participation has surged, with last year’s event seeing a record-breaking 2,385 activities nationwide—a 25% increase from 2023.

County Mayo’s passion for heritage was evident last year, with 78 registered events—well above the national average. This equates to an impressive 56.5 events per 100,000 residents, showcasing Mayo’s deep connection to its roots. From guided walks of ancient landscapes to hands-on workshops, traditional music sessions, and heritage trails, Mayo communities demonstrated the richness and diversity of their local heritage.

This year’s theme, “Exploring Our Foundations,” encourages communities to reflect on the elements that underpin their shared heritage—historic buildings, natural landscapes, stories, customs, and cultural practices. The Heritage Council hopes this theme will inspire even more local events that celebrate what makes Mayo unique.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, praised the dedication of local volunteers and groups:
“What really makes National Heritage Week so special is the incredible energy and pride that local volunteers, community groups, and heritage champions bring to it every single year. These efforts are the heartbeat of the whole experience.”

Heritage Council CEO, Virginia Teehan, highlighted the festival’s role in fostering community pride and economic vitality: “Heritage Week is a time to celebrate not only our past and those that came before, but the vibrant cultural expressions and natural environments that continue to shape our lives today.”

Community groups, schools, local historians, and heritage enthusiasts are encouraged to register their events at www.heritageweek.ie. The website offers a wealth of resources to help organisers plan, promote, and ensure accessibility for all.

With a focus on the foundations of heritage and the communities that keep it alive, Heritage Week 2025 promises to be an inspiring and inclusive celebration across County Mayo and beyond. Don’t miss your chance to be part of it!
