'Heartbreak' - Mayo people react to popular eatery forced to close

Food enthusiasts in Mayo have expressed sadness at the closing of a popular food place for day trips.

The Misunderstood Heron announced on their Instagram profile, that "after 8 years of blood, sweat, and tears of building up what's now the Misunderstood Heron, we find ourselves shot down by the Galway County Council planning department. Bloodied but not bowed, we will continue to build our catering, events, and pop-ups."

Eventhough the Misunderstood Heron is just across the border in Galway tourist destination Leenane, many Mayo people will miss the place.

Former Mayo footballer Lee Keegan replied 'Heartbreaking'. Travel influencer and radio host Roz Purcell wrote 'Hope there’s a resolution/ nearby location found'.

Also TV presenter Donal Skehan commented, saying; "We absolutely loved featuring you in a tv series which has been show in 47 countries and your story which is such an inspiration."

Role of Galway County Council

Many comments are on Instagram and Reddit are referring to the decision to close the business was made by Galway County Council on the grounds of an alleged planning permission violation.

Users are calling on Galway County Council to ' turn this ridiculous decision on its head'. The account PaulJKander wrote 'this is a shocking decision. The 5 Galway West TD’s take some action immediately!'

Meanwhile the Misunderstood Heron closed their announcement by saying 'Goodbye to 8 jobs, let's make it a weekend to remember' as they enter their final days of business.
