Mayo records rise in planning permissions granted for new houses

Planning permission for housing have risen in Mayo

THE number of planning permissions for new houses granted in Mayo has risen from 494 in 2023 to 835 units in 2024.

According to CSO statistics, Mayo bucked the national trend by recording a 59 percent rise in the number of planning permissions granted for houses. 

The number of new dwelling units granted permission fell by 21 percent nationally. A total of 32,401 units received permission in 2024, compared with 41,225 in 2023. 

Of the 835 units granted permission in Mayo in 2024, 113 were apartments. Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven units received permission from Mayo County Council in quarter 4 of 2024; 47 houses and 190 houses. 

The local authority also granted permission for 203 extensions last year. 

Galway County Council, in comparison, granted permission for 869 houses in 2024.
