New €325 million funding package a 'lifeline' for those at risk of homelessness in Mayo
Mayo County Council will be able to purchase more homes from landlords looking to sell in order to ensure tenants at risk of homelessness can remain in their homes as part of the Government's latest funding package.
On Wednesday, 5 March the Government approved a €325 million funding package for 2025 which is designed to help local authorities secure more greatly-needed homes.
The Second Hand Acquisitions Programme which is a part of the Housing for All plan, now has these record funds available to target key groups that are particularly vulnerable in the housing market such as tenants in situ acquisitions, older people and those with disabilities.

The programme also aims to facilitate the exiting of families from emergency accommodation and into permanent homes as well as buying and renewing acquisitions to tackle vacancy issues and revitalise communities.
Mayo TD and Minister of State Alan Dillion has welcomed the move, emphasising its importance in tackling the significant housing insecurity in Mayo and across the country.
The TD said: "This is a lifeline for families and individuals who might otherwise face eviction and emergency accommodation. With an extra €265 million allocated today, councils can step in, buy properties, and keep people in their homes."
Minister Dillion also highlighted that the new mandatory eligibility criteria will ensure that this funding will be directed to those most in need, including tenants supported by HAP and RAS who are at risk of eviction.
The Minister said: "This funding is about real homes for real people, keeping families together, protecting older residents, and providing stability for those who need it most.
"Mayo County Council now has more resources to secure housing and prevent homelessness. This is a Government that is taking action."
