On Thursday night, February 27, the Mayo Autism Parents Support Group will be hosting their regular meeting at the Family Resource Centre on Chapel Street in Castlebar.
Going strong for two years, the support group helps provide both valuable peer and emotional support, in a safe space with other parents who just 'get it'. This can bring some welcomed stress relief to parents, who leave feeling validated, seen and heard.
These meetings also help to celebrate the diversity of these incredible children, while also revelling in their accomplishments, but it's not all serious, as the parents' have bonded and also enjoy great laughs too.

On a practical side, parents can share experiences of dealing with assessments, school and navigating life with their autistic child/teenager.
This group was born after a gap was identified for parents who need support, after meeting during the Middletown Centre of Autism training in Castlebar in 2023.
These groups are run voluntarily by Terri Fitzpatrick, who said she is "privileged to do so." Ms Fitzpatrick is a psychotherapist and holds a diploma in adolescent psychotherapy and is a member of both the IACP and AACPI.
The meeting, which will run from 7pm to 8:30pm, also includes links for young people to meet like-minded peers.
The groups are not funded, and are always free to attend.
