Heavy congestion in Castlebar looks set to continue until at least the start of next week, as Mayo County Council announced that Lower Charles Street is set to remain closed.
The explosion at Tulsi Indian restaurant on January 26 forced the street closure.

The extension means at least three weeks will have elapsed before the road, in the centre of Mayo’s county town, reopens.
Speaking on Midwest Radio earlier in the week, Fine Gael Councillor Donna Sheridan said that the road was due to open yesterday(Wednesday, February 12).
However, with Wednesday gone and the road still closed, causing disruptions to Castlebar, Mayo County Council has issued a statement that the closures are set to continue.
On Monday, Councillor Sheridan described the ‘absolute disruption’ that diversions have caused to people in the town
“It’s an absolutely terrible situation for businesses around it, for the business itself, all the road users in Castlebar, it’s really difficult,” Councillor Sheridan stated.

The work to the front of Tulsi’s building following extensive damage in the wake of the explosion was scheduled to be completed yesterday.
However, in the Council’s statement on the matter, they pointed to a delay in the delivery of a specialist propping material which is necessary to support Tulsi’s front façade.
Since 2000, the building has been the home of the restaurant. Before this, it has been used for many purposes since it first opened in 1863 as a Presbyterian Church.
