Over half of Mayo students likely to emigrate, according to survey

A survey from secondary school student platform Studyclix has revealed some worrying trends in young people in Mayo surrounding emigration, buying a home and cost of living

Over half of Mayo students likely to emigrate, according to survey

Over two-thirds of Leaving Certificate students don’t expect to be able to buy a home in Mayo, according to a survey by student website Studyclix.

According to the survey, 61% of students reported that they were likely to emigrate, a trend which is replicated across the country.

Luke Saunders, the founder of Studyclix, said that more needs to be done to combat these worrying developments in Mayo and other rural regions.

“The above-average figures for rural counties highlight the need to invest in regional development and better resource third-level institutions outside of the biggest cities, to ensure that students can aspire to remain in their local community if they wish,” he stated.

The survey details that 67% of local students can’t see themselves as homeowners in the future, while 88% plan to move out of their homes to pursue a degree - which is significantly off the national average of 45 percent.
