The events which were due to be held this evening to mark the switching on of the Christmas lights in Westport have been cancelled due to the weather warnings which are in place.

Santa Claus and newly elected local TD Keira Keogh were due to perform the switching on ceremony at 5pm this evening but this has now been rescheduled to 6pm on Monday, December 9, due to the rain and wind weather warnings which have been put in place by Met Eireann.

The decision was announced on the Westport Town Hall Theatre Facebook page. Santa had also been due to meet the children of the town in the Town Hall this evening at the annual Spraoi na Nollag event but this has also been cancelled.

“Unfortunately due to the adverse weather warning this evening, it is with regret that we have to postpone the official switching on of the Christmas Lights at the Octagon and Spraoi na Nollag with Santa at Westport Town Hall. We will give an update on alternative arrangements ASAP,” said the statement on Facebook. Keep an eye on the Town Hall social media channels for an update on when the events will take place.

The Westport Estate have also announced that due to the weather warnings, Winter Wonderland will be cancelled from 5.10pm onwards today. They sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. Their team is actively contacting all affected customers, and they encourage the public to check their social media channels for further updates.
