BELMULLET woman Meghan O’Donnell and Dionne Lavelle from Ballina were among just 51 students honoured by Dublin City University at a recent ceremony to celebrate memorial and endowed scholarships.
Ms O’Donnell, a past pupil of Coláiste Bhreandáin Naofa who is completing a degree in nursing, was awarded The Aidan McDonnell Memorial Scholarship, which provides an annual scholarship on the DCU Access Scholarship Programme for a student from Co Mayo.
The scholarship was established by telecommunications company Vilicom Ltd in honour of Aidan McDonnell from Ballina in County Mayo, who passed away in June 2006.
Ms Lavelle, also a former student of Coláiste Bhreandáin Naofa, who is currently studying for a Bachelor of Education, was presented with the Frank Durkan Memorial Scholarship.
DCU established the Frank Durkan Memorial Scholarship in November 2008 through the support of family and friends of Frank Durkan to provide scholarship support for Access students from Mr Durkan’s native Mayo.
The 51 DUC scholarship recipients were selected based on different criteria, depending on the wishes of those who created the scholarship. These include undergraduate students supported by DCU’s Access Programme, postgraduate students in the fields of cancer research, education, law and journalism, and students with outstanding sporting and academic achievements.
