GUSTS from Storm Ashley toppled trees, severed electricity connections, disrupted flights and blocked roads when it crashed into Mayo over the weekend.

The storm brought gales of up to 130 km/h and resulted in the widespread cancellation of sporting fixtures, including the Mayo Senior Football Championship Final, which was due to take place on Sunday.

Yesterday afternoon (Monday) at 4.30pm, the ESB reported 14 outstanding faults at locations across Mayo, affecting over 1,000 customers, including over 500 on Achill Island.

A status orange wind warning remained in place for Mayo until 8pm on Sunday evening.

The storm caused over 53,000 power outages in total, predominantly across the western seaboard in counties Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry

At Ireland West Airport Knock, services to London Heathrow, London Stansted, and Manchester were halted due to the storm. The three flights attempted to land in Knock, but could not land due to the strong winds. Seven services operated as normal.

Fallen trees and severed electrical cables were reported across the county to Mayo County Council over the weekend. Minor flooding also occurred in some areas.

Council staff worked alongside ESB staff and other emergency services to remove fallen trees and repair the various damage caused by the storm.

Westport-based county councillor Brendan Mulroy, thanked the county council staff and emergency services that attended the damage which occurred over the weekend.

“When it comes to emergency services, across this world, there is no one that would have a patch on the emergency services and council officials and workers we have in this county,” Cllr Mulroy told yesterday’s (Monday) meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District.

“Anyone who goes out the door yesterday to do any sort of work is doing it for the health and safety of other people to ensure that all our vital services are kept going, and also to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, all emergency routes are kept open. I think we need to be very thankful and very grateful to the people that put their lives at risk for us,” Cllr Mulroy added.
