THE inaugural Kiltimagh Darkness Into Light walk has raised the highest total of any walk in Mayo for Pieta.
On the back of this success, a total of €17,215.16 has been raised for Pieta, the country’s leading suicide prevention and mental health charity.
The €26 sign-up fee for Darkness Into Light enables Pieta to answer two calls to their 24/7 helpline, providing immediate support and guidance to those in crisis.
The town will take a break from next year’s walk, which will be hosted in Swinford before reverting back to Kiltimagh in 2026.
Irma Joyce, Campaign Executive Connacht, Pieta West, applauded the Darkness Into Light Kiltimagh committee for their contribution.
The committee formally presented the cheque to Pieta at a presentation in Ryan’s Bar in Kiltimagh on Friday, October 18.
“We are deeply appreciative of the countless hours and effort that you and your volunteers invested in planning and executing Darkness into Light Kiltimagh. It is truly inspiring to witness so many passionate and selfless individuals coming together for a common cause,” said Ms Joyce.
Darkness Into Light Kiltimagh Chairperson Joe Corry thanked all those who had made the inaugural Kiltimagh walk such a success.
“On behalf of myself and all the volunteers, stewards, and committee members, we are absolutely delighted with the outstanding contribution of vital funds that our 2024 Darkness Into Light Kiltimagh Campaign has raised for Pieta’s Suicide Prevention Services. This year’s success is a credit to all involved, underscoring the strength and vibrancy of the community spirit here in Kiltimagh. A big thank you to all who took part to help make our Inaugural walk such a huge success and to our colleagues in Swinford who came out in force to join us on the day.”
A total of 14 Darkness Into Light walks took place in Mayo this year.
The event is the flagship fundraiser for Pieta, which provides free, accessible one-to-one counselling to people suffering from suicidal ideation, engaging in self-harm or to those bereaved by suicide.
