Gardaí announce installation of average safety camera systems in Mayo and Cavan

An Garda Síochána have confirmed that they have began testing and commissioning average speed cameras in Mayo and Cavan.

An average safety camera system has been installed on the N5 in Mayo, between Lislackagh and Cuilmore in Swinford.

Another has also been installed on the N3 in Cavan, between Kilduff and Billis.

An Garda Síochána said that the commissioning, testing and validation of the infrastructure and technology for the two average safety camera systems has commenced and will continue for a number of weeks.

The introduction of the two average safety camera systems is part of the planned roll out of three average and nine static speed safety cameras across the country this year.

This initial phase of the planned roll out comes after Tuesday's Budget 2025 announcement that €9 million in funding will be provided for up to 100 new static safety cameras across Ireland.

The sites that have been chosen for the installation of the cameras in Mayo and Cavan were selected as they meet the criteria as being high collision sites with numerous road traffic accidents which have involved injury, serious injury and fatalities.

An Garda Síochána said that speed is a significant contributor to road deaths and a factor in 30% of fatal collisions. This initiative has been developed as international experience shows that safety cameras lead to a reduction in speed by drivers.

The average safety cameras are intended to change driver behaviour and reduce the average speed of road users, and as such would lead to a reduction in collisions and making roads safer.

The next locations that the initiative will target have yet to be announced by gardaí.
