South-east Mayo reeling after two teenagers die in ‘devastating’ road accident

BALLYHAUNIS and Cloonfad have been plunged into mourning following the passing of two teenagers in a road accident.

A teenage boy and a man aged in his late teens died following a road traffic collision involving a tractor and a car which occurred on the N83 at Levallyroe in south-east Mayo after 8pm last night.

Another teenage boy was seriously injured and is being treated in hospital. All three were occupants of the car.

The driver of the tractor, a man aged in his 50s, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The road where the crash happened has been closed for a technical examination.

A family liaison officer has been assigned to support the families, according to Gardaí.

Local county councillor Alma Gallagher described the passing of the two teenagers as ‘tragic’ news for the area.

She described the victims as ‘two young men who were so well known and much loved in our community with such bright futures ahead of them’.

“To have their lives cut short in such tragic circumstances is just devastating,” she added.

“There are no words to capture how we are feeling. Cloonfad and Ballyhaunis are united in grief and our main focus is to support their families and young friends at this time. My deepest condolences to both families who I know so well and their many friends.”

Mayo general election candidate Cllr Patsy O’Brien also offered his condolences to the victims’ families.

An appeal for information has been issued and gardaí are asking road users who may have camera footage (including dash cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the crash to make it available to them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096-20560, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
