Westport Horse Fair is one of the oldest fairs in Ireland
ONE the oldest fairs in Ireland is back in Westport this weekend with the return of Westport Horse Fair.
Live music, a vintage display, a threshing display, a mobile forge, basket making, and a wide selection of horses and donkeys will be among the attractions when the fair takes place on The Mall tomorrow Saturday, September 21.
The fair dates back to 1741 and has been a staple in the calendar for horse and donkey enthusiasts across Mayo for decades.
Last year’s October fair was well-attended on a day that was blessed with dry weather conditions.
The horse fair will again coincide with the Westport Heritage Day, which will see a diverse and fascinating display of old machinery, cars and other items.
Paddy Joe Foy, Chairman of Westport Horse Fair, is encouraging all horse and donkey owners to support the show to keep the centuries-old tradition going.
Owners of foul, sheep, vintage cars and machinery are also welcome to support the fair.
Mr Foy thanked local county councillors Brendan Mulroy, John O’Malley, Chris Maxwell, Peter Flynn, and former councillor Christy Hyland, Westport Horse Show, Mayo County Council and local residents for their cooperation and support of the fair.
Traffic diversions will be in place from 6pm on this evening (Friday September 20), until 6pm on Saturday, September 21 due to the closure of South Mall Lower Fairgreen to facilitate the event. The North Mall will be closed to traffic from 7am to 6pm on Saturday September 21.
Those stewarding at the fair are requested to assemble at The Mall at 8.30am on Saturday, September 21.
