A group of former Mayo sportsmen are preparing to retrace the footsteps of St Patrick in a 400-kilometre-plus cycle to raise funds for the Order of Malta.

Under the name Raceface, the group will journey to 14 different locations associated with Ireland’s patron saint - including Croagh Patrick - along a route stretching from Co Down to Mayo.

The Raceface group will visit key locations such as Saul, Downpatrick, and Armagh before tackling the final ascent up the Reek.

The route will include several stops in Mayo, including Knock, the site of the famous Marian apparition; Mayo Abbey: a historic site with links to early Christian Ireland; Clogher Forge; the starting point of the Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail; Ballintubber Abbey, a church linked to St Patrick; the Boheh Stone, an ancient site with views of Croagh Patrick; and Kilgeever Abbey, a monastic site on the path to Croagh Patrick.

The Raceface group will cycle the 400 kilometres over two days to raise funds for the Westport Order of Malta, which is in dire need of a new ambulance.

This year is the eightieth year that the Order of Malta has provided medical support for events on Croagh Patrick. In honour of this, the cyclists will collect a shell at Strangford Lough and a symbolic item from each site (hopefully some shamrock), bringing them to their final destination at Croagh Patrick as an offering to St Patrick.

The challenge takes place on September 28-29, finishing with a hike up Croagh Patrick at approximately 4pm on Sunday, September 29.
