Green light given to flood relief scheme for North Mayo town

Minister Paschal Donohoe announced the approval of the Crossmolina Flood Relief scheme today

Mayo Ministers issue significant update on Crossmolina Flood Relief Scheme

Church Street in Crossmolina is one of the areas that has been prone to flooding

The long-awaited Crossmolina Flood Relief scheme has today been approved by Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, TD.

The scheme is the beginning of employing critical measures to alleviate any future flooding within the town.

Minister of State Alan Dillon TD welcomed the final approval, and said it ‘essentially provides the green light’ for construction proceedings in the area.

“This multi-million-euro project will provide protection to 116 properties which have been repeatedly subject to flooding, putting personal safety and livelihoods at risk,” he added.

Minister Dillon explained that the ‘initial delays’ were due to ‘design and environmental challenges’, as well as ‘new European legislation which required another Environmental Impact Assessment on part of the site’.

The Mayo town has a long history of flooding, with the most recent flood events occurring in 2015 where approximately 120 properties were inundated by flood water.

Minister of State Dara Calleary TD also welcomed the ‘fantastic’ news for Crossmolina.

He explained that over the coming days, ‘the signed order will be published’ on the Department of Public Expenditure’s website.

“This is fantastic news for Crossmolina, for its business community and private homeowners who have had to endure the pain and heartache that flooding events have previously brought to the town,” he added.

Works are expected to get underway towards the end of this year.
