Mayo native to celebrate 90th birthday in her hometown

Vera Cassels (nee McGuire) is celebrating her 90th birthday in her hometown of Westport.

Westport native Vera Cassells (nee McGuire), originally of Quay Road, will be celebrating her 90th birthday with her extended family in the Wyatt Hotel in Westport this evening.

Vera left Westport for Dublin in 1952, joining Aer Lingus as a Ground Hostess shortly after arriving in the capital. In fact her photo can still be seen in a mural in Terminal 2 of Dublin Airport (see below).

Westport native Vera Cassells features on a mural that is on display in Terminal 2 of Dublin Airport. Her grand-daughter Catherine is pictured with the mural.

Vera's parents were Mike McGuire of Peter Street, and Kate Slevin of St Helen's Gatelodge, Rosbeg. Her late brother, Tommie, remained in Westport, working in both Heneghan's Pub and McEvilly's Pub in Killawalla. Her late sister Maura (Breen), joined her in Dublin, but worked for Frank Gill Snr Dentist before she left Westport. Her younger brother Peter will travel from Cork with his family to join in the celebrations.

The gathering of the Cassells, McGuire, Flynn, and Breen families in Westport will celebrate Vera's 90th birthday. Although she's lived in Dublin for over 70 years, she remains at heart, a Westport girl, and loves reading her Mayo News every Wednesday.
