The people of Mayo are being urged to get behind the fifth annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk.

The fundraising walk will take place nationwide next month on Sunday, September 22 at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar from 12pm.

Set to be the largest Memory Walk to date, Mary Rowland from The Alzheimer Society of Ireland's Mayo Centre is urging the people of Mayo to register as soon as possible.

Speaking ahead of Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, Ms Rowland commented: “It is an occasion to reconnect with people and walk the scenic Lough Lannagh while also remembering persons with Dementia all over Mayo. We have the unique privilege on this day to inform and remind people of our Services here in Mayo which include Castlebar Daycare Service, weekly Dementia inclusive Social club and Daycare in the home.”

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is encouraging everyone to get behind this year’s walk, which is supported by Payzone, to help raise awareness and funds to help those living with dementia.

In 2023, 3,500 walkers participated in Memory Walk and raised over €120,000 which helped fund vital services for people with dementia, including Daycare, Daycare at Home, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline. Upon registration, participants will receive an Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Participant Pack, including a t-shirt and a special pack of Forget Me Not flower seeds to sow at home to help create an annual memory each time the flowers bloom.

Adult registration costs €20 and a child’s pack is €5.
