The service covers students in primary, special, and junior cycle education
Minister of State, Alan Dillon, has said it is ‘crucial’ that the free school book service be extended to Senior Cycle students.
Minister Dillon has called on Minister for Education, Norma Foley, to consider extending the programme.
Currently, the provision, which alleviates economic burdens for parents, covers students in primary and special education, and now, this year, junior cycle students also.
This year’s extension to include junior cycle students is something the Mayo TD and Minister said demonstrates his party's dedication to making education more affordable.
However, Minister Dillon said ‘in light of this’, it must be extended to Senior Cycle students.
"This initiative goes beyond just economic relief; it ensures that every student in Mayo, no matter their background, has access to necessary educational resources. This kind of equality in the classroom enhances the learning experience for everyone,” he continued.
The Fine Gael Minister said the programme ensures ‘every child has the best possible start in life and will continue to strive to eliminate educational barriers’.
The free schoolbook program is set to cover 212,000 junior cycle students across roughly 670 secondary schools nationwide.
Minister Dillon said parents and guardians in Mayo can feel ‘relieved’ as the new school year approaches.
“The financial burden of school supplies, which can be substantial, has been lifted for primary school and Junior Cycle students,” he added.
The Fine Gael Minister and TD said the initiative ‘not only saves Mayo families money but also time’, as schools are now ‘fully equipped’ with all materials before the school year starts.
