Gavin hits out at ‘absolutely scandalous’ inaction over climbing wall

The Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar, where a proposed climbing wall facility has met significant delays

A councillor who has repeatedly called for a climbing wall for Castlebar has branded the delay in delivering the project as ‘absolutely scandalous’.

In 2022, over €230,000 has been secured to develop a climbing wall at the Lough Lannagh sports complex in Castlebar.

However, rising costs have caused the project to rise to a total cost over €1.1 million. This includes comprises €500,000 in grant funding from the Sports Capital Programme and €600,000 in match funding shared equally between ATU and Mayo County Council

Cllr Blackie Gavin, who previously raised the matter with Minister Michael McGrath, has yet again hit out at the delay to the project.

“It’s absolutely scandalous that this is going on. A vacant building since 2014, it’s unbelievable. It wouldn’t happen anywhere else in the world,” Cllr Gavin told the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

Cllr Gavin’s concerns were echoed by Cllr Michael Kilcoyne and Cllr Donna Sheridan.

Allocations for this year’s Sports Capital Programme are due to be announced in the autumn.
