Mayo landmark to be converted into hostel as council gives green light

Planning permission for the conversion of a landmark Westport building into hostel accommodation has been granted.

Mayo County Council has this week (July 29) approved a planning application submitted for the conversion of the existing Old Cap Factory building on Bridge Street into a 13-bedroom hostel.

The building has been derelict since the factory closed in the 1980s and is within the town’s Architectural Conservation Area (ACA).

The application was submitted in December 2023.

The conversion will include hostel accommodation as well as staff and ancillary spaces, and all associated site works and service connections.

The application was approved with 8 conditions.

A local councillor, Cllr Peter Flynn, previously spoke out against about the proposed plan.
