DEDICATED parking for islanders at Roonagh Pier has been ruled out by Mayo County Council.
Louisburgh-based councillor, Chris Maxwell, called for residents of Clare Island to be given dedicated parking spaces at Roonagh Pier, where daily ferries travel to and from the island.
Heather Gibbons, area engineer for the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, said it was ‘not really feasible’ to give designated parking for islanders.
Replying to Cllr Maxwell at the monthly meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, Ms Gibbons said such a measure would ‘isolate tourists’ seeking to travel to and from the island.
Cllr Maxwell had acknowledged that tourism was ‘vital’ for the area but said concern had been expressed about the lack of available space for islanders seeking to park their cars at Roonagh.
Ms Gibbons told the meeting that the council is looking to purchase land at Roonagh to develop the existing car park at the pier.
