Thousands expected to climb Croagh Patrick for Reek Sunday

Low chance of rain expected to draw thousands of pilgrims to Croagh Patrick for Reek Sunday pilgrimage

FAVOURABLE weather conditions are expected to draw thousands of pilgrims to Croagh Patrick for Reek Sunday this afternoon.

Last year, over 4,000 people climbed Mayo's holy mountain despite wet weather conditions and the long-running pilgrimage coinciding with the All-Ireland Senior Football final.

Today, with no rainfall forecast and temperatures to reach 19 degrees Celcius in the afternoon, that number is expected to be matched, if not exceeded.

People have been climbing the mountain all throughout the weekend, starting on Garland Friday which coincided with a Mass to celebrate families who sold goods on Croagh Patrick over the years.

Mass on the summit began at 8am this morning (Sunday July 27) and will continue until 2.00pm today.
