Rosmoney Pier
CONCERNS have been raised about the safety of Rosmoney Pier, where a number of incidents have occurred due to an unfinished surface at the pier.
Resurfacing works which took place at the pier excluded the final two metres, thus creating a drop-off which is posing a hazard for people trying to launch boats.
Cllr Peter Flynn told the monthly meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District that it was ‘lucky’ that no accidents had yet occurred at the pier.
Cllr Flynn called for a ‘concrete plan’ for the upkeep of piers throughout West Mayo and said the bylaws governing the county’s piers were ‘way out of date’.
“I think we’ve neglected the whole area of piers and harbours over the last number of years. It’s something that we need to focus on. They really are key assets to our county in terms of tourism but also people in their day-to-day lives,” he said.
Enhancement works on the pier’s slipway will be completed in September while work on the navigational aids on the way towards Westport will be completed in the next few weeks.
