The car park in Westport's Mill Street
WESTPORT-based county councillor Peter Flynn has proposed the suspension of car parking charges in Westport until council-owned car parks are resurfaced and marked properly.
Following through on a pledge made at the June meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, Cllr Flynn called for free parking in all public car parks from October 7 due to their ‘disgraceful’ condition.
The meeting heard that elderly people using the town’s car park are having to jump to avoid large puddles which occur in some areas due to their condition.
Cllr Brendan Mulroy seconded Cllr Flynn’s motion and sought an update on the number of parking fines issues in the area.
Heather Gibbons, area engineer for the Westport-Belmullet area, said it would not be appropriate to use grant funding for roads to maintain car parks in Westport.
Ms Gibbons said that the municipal district did not have specific funds for the repair and maintenance of car parks.
