MAYO Cancer Support have announced that the 2024 Great Western Greenway Cycle will be held on Sunday, August 4.

This family-friendly 50km leisure cycle along the Great Western Greenway between Westport and Tiernaur was founded by the late John Tiernan and has been run annually in aid of Mayo Cancer Support for over a decade.

John, of Doughmakone, Louisburgh, was a former vice chairperson of the board of directors of Mayo Cancer Support Association and gave tirelessly and generously of his time for the good of others up until his passing in 2022.

All proceeds will be in aid of Mayo Cancer Support - a registered local charity that provides emotional support to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis or bereavement.

Based at Rock Rose House in Castlebar, the charity’s services include professional one-to-one counselling, complementary therapies like massage, reiki and reflexology, children’s services and group activities. All are available free of charge to cancer patients/survivors and their loved ones.

The charity is honoured to continue this much-loved annual event as a fitting tribute to John and his great legacy in the local cancer support sector.

Registration costs €20 per person and can be done online or in person from 9am at Westport Leisure Centre on the day, with cyclists departing from 10am.

Refreshments will be served along the way at Nevin’s of Tiernaur.
