€36,400 in funding allocated to over 60 Mayo sports clubs

63 clubs and organisations in the county were awarded funding allocated under the Return to Sport scheme

€36,400 in funding allocated to over 60 Mayo sports clubs

The funding comes under the partnership's Return to Sport scheme

Sixty-Three Mayo sporting clubs and organisations have been allocated €36,400 in funding.

The allocation came at the final Mayo Sports Partnership Committee meeting of its term, and comes through the partnership's Return to Sport Small grant scheme.

All community and voluntary clubs were eligible for the funding.

Announcing the allocations, outgoing Chairperson of the partnership, Councillor Michael Loftus, congratulated all organisations on their work promoting physical activity in the community.

“While we have a limited budget for this scheme, its fair to say that a relatively modest contribution towards physical activity or volunteer upskilling programmes can have a positive impact in communities across the county,” said Cllr Loftus.

He added: “On behalf of Mayo Sports Partnership, I would like to thank Sport Ireland for providing the funding for this initiative and also to Mayo County Council for all their support.”

Recent data from the 2023 Irish Sports Monitor Report shows that for the first time, close to two million adults are participating in sport regularly, with 47 percent of the population now active.

Projects submitted for assistance include integration sports programmes, participation initiatives for people with disabilities, women in sport initiatives, support for new sports such as pickleball, support for Mayo Autism Camp along with volunteer coach education training assistance for sports such as soccer, power boating and tennis.

Head of Mayo Sports Partnership, Charlie Lambert, called it ‘refreshing’ to see priority given to hard to reach groups throughout the application process.

“Inclusion is one of Mayo Sports Partnership's main priorities and this small grant scheme supports just that,” he concluded.
