Belmullet Town prepares to commemorate a most significant milestone in its past with an event that promises to captivate both locals and visitors alike.

On Saturday, May 4, 2024, the town will come alive with a performative street spectacle hosted by the renowned LUXE Landscape Theatre Company.

The event, aptly titled ‘Aisling an Iarthar – A Mirage in the West’ pays homage to a pivotal moment in Belmullet’s history.

In May 1824, William Henry Carter, an absentee landlord, embarked on a journey into the barony of Erris via the newly constructed road from Castlebar. This historic arrival marked the birth of Belmullet town, envisioned and brought to life amidst the untamed wilderness, earning it the epithet of an ‘oasis in the desert’.

Fast-forward to 2024, the spirit of that momentous occasion will be reignited through a mesmerising lantern procession, tracing the path of Carter’s inaugural journey from land to sea.

The community’s active participation will infuse the event with a sense of unity and shared history, making it an experience to cherish for generations to come.

“As Chairperson of Belmullet200, I am thrilled to help orchestrate this fusion of our town’s history and creativity in this spectacular event,” remarked Mark Ruddy.

He continued: “This celebration not only honours our past but also shines a bright light on our future. It’s a momentous occasion that will leave a lasting impact on our community, showcasing the unique spirit, culture and charm of Belmullet and Erris for all to see.”

As the clock strikes 9pm on Carter Square in Belmullet, spectators will be transported back in time, witnessing the magic of history unfolding before their eyes.

The procession, led by a carriage and a lantern horse, will weave its way through the town streets, accompanied by enchanting music and illuminated handcart pieces, casting a spellbinding glow on the surroundings.

As the procession progresses, fire performers will light a path with flames, while the community’s lanterns will illuminate the night. The journey will culminate at the town’s historic pier, where sculptural fire drawings will celebrate the town’s maritime heritage.

On the beach nearby, a stunning fire mandala made from 200 flaming steel bowls symbolises Belmullet’s resilience, while a firework finale will ignite awe amongst the crowd.

Mairead Melody Carr, Manager of Mayo North Tourism, stated, “This celebration will attract tourists to North Mayo, encouraging visitors to explore the town and wider environs.

“This event highlights the variety of experiences available in our region, including historical sites and cultural attractions. We look forward to welcoming guests to the area and showcasing the appeal of Belmullet to a wider audience,” she concluded.

This event, which is proudly supported by Mayo County Council, Fáilte Ireland, The Department of Foreign Affairs, Údaras na Gaeltachta, The Arts Council and Ealaín na Gaeltachta, coincides with MayoDay2024.
