MAYO County Council has purchased land for the delivery of social housing in Louisburgh.

Cllr Christy Hyland estimated that 12 houses could be built on the site within the next two years.

The local authority aims to deliver over 1,000 social houses by the end of 2026 under the Housing For All plan. Mayo County Council had 30 social housing units in Louisburgh in October 2022.

“I have lobbied hard for land to be bought in Louisburgh so the council can build houses and it has just been confirmed in the last week that the council have bought land in Louisburgh,” Cllr Hyland told The Mayo News.

The Independent councillor also repeated calls for the abolition of income bands for social housing and for land to be acquired for social housing in Kilmeena and Aughagower.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” he added.
