It was a bombshell that was dropped last Wednesday when Leo Varadkar announced that he was to step down as Fine Gael party leader, meaning that he will also resign as Taoiseach. The discussion didn't take long to evolve around the question who was going to take over the party leadership and as head of government. Additionally there have been calls for a general election by opposition politicians.
The Mayo News put the question to our online readers: Do you think there should be a General Election? And the result is clear: 70 percent replied 'Yes' whereas only 24 percent voted 'No' to a general election. The remaining voters were undecided.
The result is a clear endorsement, almost in line with the numbers that rejected the two referendums two weeks ago. Eventhough one should not assume an immediate correlation, the mood of the public seems clear: A significant majority supports a General Election now instead of next year.
