A public meeting is to take place regarding a disused primary care centre which was due to open in 2021.
Aontú local election candidate Paul Lawless, said that Hazelhill Primary Care Centre was beginning to deteriorate due to exposure to the elements.
Construction on the facility began in 2019 but stalled in May 2021 after a dispute arose over construction inflation related costs.
When opened, the facility was due to provide nursing, physiotherapy and home support.
Mr Lawless said that allowing the building to further deteriorate would result in higher costs for the taxpayer.
“Lack of primary care in the community is already forcing people into overcrowded Emergency Department in MUH which can’t cope,” said Mr Lawless.
“I have written to the Minister for Health and the HSE stressing the importance of this project and demanding its completion ASAP. The lack of communication and urgency from HSE in relation to a project of this significance is disappointing.”
The public meeting to discuss the Hazelhill Primary Care Centre will take place in Ballyhaunis Community Hall on Wednesday March 20 at 8.30pm. The matter has already been raised in the Dáil by Mayo TDs.
Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has said the Department of Health remains ‘committed’ to the completion of the project.
In a statement to The Mayo News, a HSE spokesperson said that the HSE has remained in contact with the developer regarding the project.
“The developer has confirmed that the original rates in the lease agreement are now not economically viable due to increased construction costs for materials and trades.
“The HSE has been assessing this issue on a national basis and all options are being explored including rate uplifts, withdrawing the current agreement and re-advertising of the development. Re-advertising may permit the developer to resubmit a tender at higher rates.
“Once the above assessment is concluded and agreed, a programme for recommencement to completion will be confirmed.”
