Mayo TDs have welcomed the news that €34 million has been allocated to national roads and greenways across the county.
Included in this allocation is €5.5m for the continued redevelopment of the Newport to Mulranny road at Derrada with a further €5.6m allocated for road improvement works on the Balla to Claremorris project at Heathlawn, Manulla.
A total of €4,975,000 has been allocated to Greenways across Mayo. Funding has been allocated to projects such as Westport Viaduct, the Clew Bay Greenway from Belclare to Murrisk, Blacksod Bay Greenway, along with a greenway linking Charlestown, Swinford and Foxford. All of these projects are at early planning stages.
Funding has also been granted for the continued development of the Great Western Greenway at Newport village along with the Tonragee, Achill project.
The funding has been allocated to Mayo County Council through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for national roads and greenways.
Deputy Alan Dillon said: “I welcome this substantial funding towards these projects in Mayo. This year, priority is being given to the ongoing progression of local by-passes around some of the country’s best known market towns including Foxford in Mayo, which is at an earlier stage of development. This is in line with the Government’s Towns First policy, facilitating more people-friendly development and ensuring that the towns can thrive and develop without 24/7 car congestion. This project will progress rapidly.”
Deputy Michael Ring added: “I am pleased to note the Government’s continued investment in our roads and Greenways. The circa €74 million funding nationally for Greenways is part of the overall commitment of Government to invest in active travel each year over the lifetime of the Government.”
Deputy Dara Calleary stated: “These road allocations will go towards a top priority of Fianna Fáil in Government, which is to build on the roads investment that has taken place over the last 20 years which has helped improve regional connectivity and has supported economic development across the country. Continued investment will also ensure improved safety of road users."
