Sustainable living is becoming increasingly important and with this in mind The Gallery in Westport is offering a clothes repair workshop next week Monday. The name: Sew good. The goal: To combat fast-fashion culture.

The Gallery clothes repair workshop supported by volunteers Gemma Hensey and Carmel Healy, aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of fast-fashion, which contributes an alarming 92 million tons of clothing to landfills worldwide annually,” says Tom Ramwell, The Gallery's owner.

The concept of the workshop emerged during a solo backpacking trip in northern Italy, where Tom Ramwell was inspired during an interview with the manager of the Patagonia store in Milan, for his upcoming podcast, about the repair service this global brand offers.

Rooted in a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship, instilled by his parents, Tom has dedicated himself to operating The Gallery from a less environmentally damaging standpoint. From pioneering Ireland's first 'natural wine' bar to hosting community-centric events and initiatives, including music, poetry, crafts and so on, The Gallery has tried to consistently lead the charge in promoting sustainable practices, including Westport’s first free mini-library.

"We're creating a space where community members can come together to mend clothing, fostering a sense of connection and empowerment,” says Tom. “Our ultimate goal is to evolve this workshop into a thriving community hub that combines art projects and secures funding to combat the fast-fashion industry while advocating for fair labour practices and environmental sustainability.”

The launch of the clothes repair workshop underscores The Gallery's commitment to promoting a more conscientious approach to consumption and fostering a greener, more equitable future for all.

The workshop takes place on Mondays, from 2pm-3.30pm. More information on the website.
