Planning permission has been sought for 17 new mobile homes for a caravan park beside the famous Golden Strand beach in Dugort on Achill Island

PLANNING permission has been sought to construct 17 new mobile home parking bays along with two electric car charging points in an Achill caravan site.

McNicholl Caravans (Achill) Ltd have applied to Mayo County Council for planning permission to construct 17 new mobile home parking bays in Lavelle's Caravan Park close to the Golden Strand beach in Dugort on Achill Island.

The proposed development will consist of 17 Willerby Castleton mobile home units with elevated decking accompanying each unit at the northern end of the caravan site. It is also proposed to install two electric car charging points on the caravan site.

The planning application submitted by D Moran and Associates Surveyors on behalf of the applicant stated that an appropriate assessment screening report for the Doogort Machair/Lough Doo SAC was submitted under a previous planning application and it indicted that there would be no significant impacts to the SAC as a result of the mobile home site development and the new application ill to be totally housed within the existing caravan park.

The application also states that there are no new openings between the adjacent Blue Flag beach and the caravan site as part of this application and the caravan park has existing measures in place to protect the habitats in this location and conservation of the area continues to be of high priority for the applicants.

McNicholl Caravans Ltd are a Co Derry based company and last year they had bought Lavelle's Caravan Park which is one of seven caravan parks they own. As well as owning caravan parks they also supply new and used caravans and mobile homes to a variety of holiday parks in Northern Ireland, Scotland and also in Co Donegal.
