Nifty250 Apr 23: Labour councillor calls for bank bail-out protests; small Mayo crowd expected in Croke Park

Nifty250_300x250Cllr Harry Barrett is urging Castlebar Town Council to take to the streets in protest; ‘very slow’ demand for NFL final tickets

Barrett calls for street protests against Anglo bail-out

Castlebar Labour Town Councillor, Harry Barrett, has received support from council colleagues for a motion calling on the authority to facilitate the holding of a rally protesting against the use of €22 billion of taxpayer’s money to bail out Anglo Irish Bank.
Cllr Barrett brought the motion before this week’s meeting of Castlebar Town Council and plans to hold a public rally on the Mall in Castlebar sometime in May.
“We have a duty to protest against a decision by government that will affect every citizen for years to come. I invite every citizen of this town, county and beyond, to join this protest rally when advertised.
“This money should have been used to stimulate the economy. Now we have wasted the money and condemned the next class of school leavers to the dole.”
The motion is due to be further discussed at the May meeting of the authority, after which Cllr Barrett hopes that a sub-committee will be swiftly set-up to allow a protest take place within ten days of that meeting.

Small Mayo crowd travelling for League Final

LESS than 5,000 Mayo supporters are expected to make the trip to Dublin for Sunday’s National Football League Final against Cork at Croke Park.
The Mayo GAA Board have reported a ‘very slow’ demand for tickets and clubs have been surprised too with the lack of interest from members.
Meanwhile, a local bookmaker (Stagg Betting in Ballindine) don’t seem to think much of Mayo’s chances. They have made Cork the 1/3 favourites with Mayo available at 3/1.
