Spinning classes, instructor-lead cardiovascular-exercise sessions based on riding stationary bikes, are all the rage.
Take a spin
Spinning is an instructor-lead cardiovascular-exercise class based on riding stationary bikes. Like other cardiovascular exercises, spinning helps maintain a healthy weight and reduce health issues associated with obesity and a sedentary lifestyle, such as heart problems and Type 2 Diabetes. It also helps elevate the mood. Though spinning classes are generally group workout sessions, individuals choose their own pace. Since resistance and pace vary from person to person, spinning provides an effective workout for a variety of fitness levels in the same class. Unlike running and walking, spinning is non-impact. This means individuals with joint problems, who may not be able to endure walking or running, can participate fully. Spinning burns of 500 or more calories per class. It also tones muscles and decreases body fat. As a year-round activity, spinning is great for stress relief, increasing energy and improving overall strength and cardio endurance. Many fitness and leisure centres now offer spinning classes. Westport Leisure Park, for example, has just developed a dedicated Spinning Studio and its spinning instructors are offering classes several times a week. Participants also enjoy complimentary use of the 25m swimming pool, as well as the sauna, jacuzzi and steamroom. Nice!
