Westport fails to meet Government criteria for CCTV installation
Westport DΡil Deputy Michael Ring has again raised the issue of having CCTV cameras installed in Westport - but the Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has clearly stated that the town has not met a number of qualifying criteria to get approval for the scheme. Deputy Ring said the system was urgently needed in view of an increase in anti-social behaviour. “CCTV systems have become necessary and have proven successful in curbing such activity. I will be contacting the Minister again to ask that funding be provided for CCTV for Westport.”
Mortimer returns to Mayo team for Dublin NFL clash
Captain Trevor Mortimer returns to the Mayo side for their meeting with Dublin on Sunday at McHale Park. However, Mark Ronaldson has been named in the team even though he has received a four-week suspension. He could be replaced by Neil Douglas or Alan Freeman. Mayo: David Clarke, Donal Vaughan, Ger Cafferkey, Keith Higgins, Peadar Gardiner, Trevor Howley, Kevin McLoughlin, Tom Parsons, Ronan McGarrity, Andy Moran, Seamus O'Shea, Trevor Mortimer, Enda Varley, Aidan O'Shea, Mark Ronaldson.
Talk to explain origin of Mayo’s complex placenames
Everwonder why Louisburgh is called Cluain CearbΡn in Irish, or what Turlough actually means? Well, all will be revealed at a talk on placenames which will take place in the Mayo Education Centre next Tuesday evening. The talk will be given by Fiachra MacGabhann, who has researched the background to placenames throughout Mayo, at 8pm.
