Nifty 250 Jul 16: Ballinrobe ready to swing into action; Deluge of rain forces soccer cancellations

Heritage Day in Ballinrobe tomorrow; Soccer matches fall foul to heavy rain
Swinging Sixties theme for Ballinrobe Heritage Day
THE Swinging Sixties will be the theme of Ballinrobe’s annual Heritage Day, which takes place tomorrow, Saturday, July 24. “We have had five Heritage Days in the past, and we hope to have the biggest one yet in 2010. It will be a central item in the town’s Queen of the Lakes summer festival, and a huge effort is being put in to make the Heritage Day a huge success,” said David Hall of the local organising committee. “We have designated The Swinging Sixties as the theme, so local people will dress up in appropriate costume. It should be great fun.” For more information see www.ballinrobeheritageday.com.
Soccer matches abandoned in Westport and Ballyheane
RAIN stopped play in Westport on Thursday evening as the Super League soccer match between Westport United and Manulla was abandoned after 22 minutes. Dessie Campbell had given Manulla the lead after 12 minutes, while Westport’s Philip Keegan had a goal ruled out for offside. But torrential rain led to much surface water, and referee Damien McGrath suspended and then abandoned the match. The Westaro Cup game between Ballyheane and Ballina Town was also abandoned. Both games have been rescheduled for next Thursday. Legend has it that a wet St Swithin’s Day means rain for the next 40 days. The Mayo League will be hoping there’s no truth in the old wives’ tale.
