Teenager pleads not guilty to manslaughter of Mayo garda

A 19-year-old Donegal man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Swinford native, Garda Robbie McCallion, but pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Garda McCallion in Letterkenny last year.
Jamie McGrenaghan of Gortnacraw, Kerrykeel, Fanad, appeared before Letterkenny Circuit Court this morning on four charges in connection with the death of the 29-year-old garda.
Garda McCallion died less than two weeks after being knocked down while investigating reports of a stolen car at Tara Court in Letterkenny. A jury will now be sworn in before Mr McGrenaghan’s trial begins.

McGuire to become Cathaoirleach of Westport for second time

FINE GAEL councillor, Tereasa McGuire, is set to be installed as Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council at this evening’s annual general meeting of the council.
Cllr McGuire, who is principal of Drummin National School, will become the first citizen of the town for a second time, having previously held the position in 2006/2007. She takes over from her Fine Gael colleague Cllr Myles Staunton.

Mayo's young soccer stars get first win in Kennedy Cup

MAYO’S U-13 soccer side bounced back from defeats to Sligo/Leitrim (4-2), Longford (2-0) and Kerry (1-0) with victory over North Tipperary on Wednesday in the quarter-final of the Kennedy Trophy in Limerick. Simon Butler scored Mayo’s only goal in a 1-0 win. They now meet Drogheda today (Thursday) in the semi-final.
