SAXY GUY Andy Sheppard and his ensemble will perform Shakespeare Songs in Castlebar this Monday, March 14.
Jazz-sax virtuoso Andy Sheppard and ensemble perform Shakespeare Songs at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar this Monday, March 14 at 8pm as part of a prestigious national Music Nertwork tour.
Dubbed ‘the great English poet of the saxophone’, Andy Sheppard joins forces with drummer Christophe Marguet and pianist Guillaume de Chassy in a musical journey across Shakespeare’s world. The show has been described as ‘magical’ by The Jazz Breakfast, and Sheppard has been praised on thejazzmann.com for his ‘ability to make even the simplest melodic fragments sound profound and beautiful’.
Part-improvised and part-written, the music draws inspiration from Renaissance composers, with the trio unleashing an extraordinary palette of sounds to conjure up everything from star-crossed lovers and brooding Danish princes to the rustling advance of Birnam Wood.
West Country saxophone colossus, Andy Sheppard has composed over 350 works and collaborated with artists as varied as percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, violinist L Shankar, pianist Joanna MacGregor, songwriter John Martyn and a myriad of leading jazz figures, including Carla Bley, George Russell and Gil Evans.
De Chassy and Marguet, who share writing duties on the project, have between them collaborated with such luminaries as Paul Motian, Mark Murphy, Enrico Rava and Buddy de Franco.
