Acclaimed folk singer SeΡn Keane returns to Inishturk on Saturday, July 6, for a special concert in the island’s community centre.
Hailing from Galway, Keane is a member of one of Ireland’s most celebrated musical families with a long tradition of music and singing on both sides featuring his sister, traditional singer, Dolores Keane. He began performing traditional songs from the age of seven, sporting a very distinctive sean nós voice and soon picking up 13 all-Ireland singing medals.
Drawn into the world of theatre, Keane starred in Druid’s production of ‘The Midnight Court’, as well as ‘Sheep’s Milk on the Boil’ at the Abbey Theatre, before deciding to dedicate himself to music full-time.
Embarking on a solo career, Keane brought his formidable talents for interpreting traditional songs into new areas mixing folk, country blues and pop songs over eight critically acclaimed albums including ‘All Heart’, ‘No Roses’, ‘Turn a Phrase’ and ‘No Stranger’ and his latest album ‘The Irish Scattering’.
Over the last decade, Keane has become a popular international folk act, with Mojo Magazine describing his work as ‘exceptional’, Folk Roots hailing him as ‘manna from heaven’ and Irish author Joseph O’Connor describing the singer as ‘the Caruso of Irish music’ in his book, The Star of the Sea.
Keane’s latest album sees the singer turn his attention to the theme of emigration, tracking the progress of the Irish nation on its travels around the world. ‘The Irish Scattering’ was recorded live over two nights at concerts performed in The Black Box Theatre in his home county of Galway. More recently, Keane returned to the recording scene with a great new single, ‘Painting A Picture Of Ireland’.
