Eric Mortimer, Shrule, describes a break in Lanzarote, where he went with his girlfriend last May
Feeling like a million euro in the sun
Eric Mortimer Shrule
Already this year I’ve been to Lanzarote in May with my girlfriend. It was a very enjoyable week’s break, helped by the long sunny days with comfortable temperatures between 22 and 27 degrees. The hotel (Iberostar) was excellent, had brilliant facilities, was very affordable and the staff there were very helpful also. A couple could enjoy an evening meal at restaurants situated on beautiful marinas for €40 that would include three courses and a drink. Sipping vino and enjoying cuisine in the evening sun would you make feel like a million euro (and more than likely we were sitting close to somebody with a yacht worth a million euro!) Down the years I’ve also had a few European city breaks and find it is almost the same price if you get the flights early. There’s something exciting yet traumatic about driving 150 miles in the dark from Krakow to Zilina (somewhere in Slovakia) in a rented Hyundai Getz through mountains, on roads dominated by artics with a non-compliant Sat Nav and an even less reliable co-driver - the brother! We are also hoping to have a short break somewhere in Ireland this year. There are lots of offers online for various midweek/weekend breaks at nice hotels and guesthouses. I feel now more than ever it’s important to try and help the local economy as much as you can. We’ve had the sun holiday - with the virtual guarantee of great weather - so a trip to somewhere scenic we’ve never been before would be nice. Donegal and Killarney come to mind but the choice depends on the outcome of the All Ireland semi-final!
