‘I, Elizabeth’, Rebecca Vaughan’s spellbinding one-woman hit show, is showing in The Linenhall next week.
Breathing life into Queen Elizabeth I
A five-star sell-out hit at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe, ‘I, Elizabeth’ – Rebecca Vaughan’s spellbinding one-woman hit show – will be performed at The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday, January 26. Adapted from the speeches, letters, poems and prayers of Elizabeth I, the play tells the story of a young queen who, at a vital crossroads in history, steps from the shadows to unburden herself of her many troubles and reveal her innermost thoughts on marriage, succession, religion, war, and the challenges to her throne. Queen at 25, political phoenix and famously unmarried, Elizabeth I was the most educated woman of her age – but who was the woman beneath the crown? Using only Elizabeth’s words, solo performer Rebecca Vaughan explores the monarch’s struggle to reconcile the desires of womanhood with the duties of sovereignty. This acclaimed production, directed by Guy Masterson and Dyad Productions, has won rave reviews. “An outstanding achievement” said One4review; “A moving, emotional and passionate production … A definite must-see for history and theatre addicts,” enthused Hairline; “This spellbinding performance is evidently a true labour of love, created with delicacy and portrayed with startling conviction” gushed Whatsonstage.com. Theatre lovers and history buffs alike are in for a treat.
‘I, Elizabeth’ will be staged at The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, on Wednesday, January 26 at 8pm. Booking advised.
