Mayo volunteers honoured at hospice event during National Volunteering Week

200 attendees gathered in Claremorris as Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation recognised the dedication of volunteers
The Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation hosted a Volunteer Celebration Day in Claremorris last Friday (May 15) recognising the contribution of long-serving volunteers and support groups from across Mayo and Roscommon.
More than 200 volunteers, supporters and community members gathered at the McWilliam Park Hotel as the Foundation paid tribute to those whose efforts help sustain hospice and palliative care services in Mayo.
Guests enjoyed live music and dance from Pat Mulchrone, refreshments and an outside broadcast by Midwest Radio, while volunteers had the opportunity to meet Foundation staff, board members and fellow supporters.
Attendees also heard personal stories from volunteers including Anne Lyons of Ballyhaunis, who spoke about her experience of supporting the Foundation and what volunteering means to local communities.
Martina Jennings, CEO of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, said volunteers are central to the organisation’s ability to deliver hospice care.
“Volunteers are the cornerstone of everything we do at Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation,” she said. “The Mayo Hospice, Roscommon Hospice, and our Community Palliative Care Teams would not be possible without the commitment, generosity and dedication of our volunteers.”
Ms Jennings also said demand for hospice services continues to grow, particularly with the planned development of the Sunflower Children’s Hospice, and encouraged people across Mayo to consider volunteering.
“Whether you can spare a few hours each month or more, your support can make a real difference,” she said.
Board Chair Paul Foxe said volunteers play an essential role in helping families through some of life’s most difficult moments.
“Our volunteers give so freely of their time and energy, and in doing so they make it possible for us to be there for families at the most difficult moments of their lives,” he said.
He added that the Foundation hopes to expand services further across the western region.
The Foundation is also preparing for its annual National Sunflower Days fundraising campaign, which will take place across Mayo and Roscommon on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13.
