Demolition of derelict Ellison Street houses to begin next week

Councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed plans to demolish derelict buildings on Ellison Street in Castlebar, with works set to begin on March 18

Harry Barrett has welcomed the demolition works on a number of long-derelict buildings on Ellison Street in Castlebar , which are set to begin next week as part of efforts to improve the town centre.

The works will involve the removal of derelict houses at Nos. 3–6 Ellison Street, with construction crews expected to begin the demolition process on Wednesday, March 18. The project is scheduled to continue for approximately 12 to 14 weeks.

Castlebar councillor Harry Barrett described the buildings as long-standing eyesores in the heart of the town.

“I hope to be there to see these eyesores taken down,” he said. “I want to say thank you to the staff in the Municipal District and my council colleagues for keeping the pressure on to begin the process of renewing an important part of the town.”

The works are being carried out under the direction of Mayo County Council as part of wider efforts to address dereliction and support the regeneration of the town centre.

For safety reasons, the footpath and parking bays directly outside the properties will be temporarily closed for the duration of the demolition works.

According to the council, the site will be fully secured with hoarding, with additional safety measures in place to protect the public and neighbouring properties while the demolition is underway.

Local representatives say the removal of the buildings will mark an important step in improving the appearance of the town centre and paving the way for future redevelopment of the site.
