Gardaí carried out a major operation this weekend targeting unsafe driving and drug-related activity across Mayo, resulting in arrests, vehicle seizures and fines.
Members of the Mayo South Community Engagement Area, the Roads Policing Unit, the Divisional Drugs Unit, and the Garda Dog Unit were deployed as part of an operation to detect offences and enforce road safety and drug legislation.
During the operation, 43 drivers were tested for drink and drug driving. Three people were arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving, while three vehicles were seized. Gardaí also seized two e-scooters and found three individuals in possession of controlled drugs.
In total, 17 fines were issued for a range of offences including speeding, driving without reasonable consideration, having no tax or NCT, failure to display N plates, unaccompanied learner driving and non-conforming registration plates.

Maria Hayes, Inspector at An Garda Síochána’s Westport station, said the operation forms part of an ongoing effort to improve safety on local roads.
“Keeping our communities safe on the roads is a priority, and operations such as this are part of a continuing effort and not just a once-off,” she said.
“We are, and will continue to be, out on the roads day and night to keep road users safe, and will not tolerate illicit or dangerous behaviour by some road users.”
